New York Alarm Industry Gathers Oct. 6, 2011

By Arnold Blumenthal
Publisher & Editor/Security Line

A gathering of over 150 alarm dealer professionals, distributors, manufacturers and those who have left the industry through retirement or to pursue other careers, attended MBFAA’s Pioneers Night at Terrace On the Park in Queens early this month. The evening was highlighted by the presentation of awards and certificates to those industryites who have been in the industry for at least 35 years, the length of time that the MBFAA has been in modern-day existence.

Master of Ceremonies for the evening was Ron Davis of Graybeards, with special accolades to be given to Alan Glasser, executive director of the MBFAA (and an industry veteran in his own right), for his efforts and work in putting the evening together. Also special nods’ should be given to Mike Zemering, president of the MBFAA, Harvey Cohen, immediate past president, and his daughter Crystal; Ken Kirschenbaum, Esq., for his special promotional efforts to make the evening; Ken Gould, executive vice president, membership, for his assistance, in helping to introduce the honorees. And let’s not forget special tributes to all of those for the work they put into making the affair work.

It has long been said that a picture is worth a thousand words. Therefore, this issue is devoted to pictures of the affair, the gathering and some of the special highlights. So enjoy the memories and keep this issue handy in the coming years for remembering the veterans of the alarm industry, your friends and fellow colleagues.

As an aside, a special tribute was paid to the ”newbies” of the industry at the end of the evening. Members of the Association who are veterans of the three wars – World War II, Korea, and Vietnam, were called upon to open the night by leading the attendees in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Mike Zemering, president, then introduced Alan Glasser, who opened the night by presenting Ken Gould who talked of his Toys for Tots that would benefit the Fire Department’s Burn unit. (All those interested in contributing toys to benefit this worthy cause, please contact Ken).

Ken Kirschenbaum, Esq. then spoke on the law since the start of the association to the present day, and then introduced Ron Davis as the Master of Ceremonies.

Stanley Oppenheimer of DGA took center stage with a history of the alarm industry from the days of ADT in New York City in the 1800s to the modern days with the marking of the technological advancements that have brought the industry to its current level of professionalism and abilities.

Ray Adams, of Owl Burglar Alarm and past president of Holmes Protection, was introduced and told the group of some of the early days and finished with several anecdotes about the business.

Then members were introduced who were veterans starting with those with 35-to-67 years of service.

A final speaker was Gerry Geller, who was one of the cofounders of the Association who spoke of the first meetings in a diner in Hicksville.

Acknowledgement was also paid to Stu Gilbert who helped in the logistics.

A special table was set up in the rear of the dining area which featured some memorabilia, including an original audio tape of Ron Davis’ early seminars.

So Enjoy the Photos and with an aside to Bob Hope-

“Thanks for the Memories.” •
